Thomson at the Moment Gives Support to People’s Life at the Sanctuary Mission
People say change is great, luckily for the community Nada Thomson made a big change; from organising properties to lives. Thomson used to own an organizing, staging and decorating business, after attending the sanctuary in 2006 started helping and then in 2008 started working with them full time.
The Sanctuary is a healthy or wealthy community that is representation for the individuals who may have lost everything. The Sanctuary strives to help and support everyone regardless of the colour of your skin or your religion. The community is made up of of men and women from 25 to 55. Each year the Sanctuary gives help to thousands of people, assisting about 500 different people each week.
The street outreach team does an important job, going out to people on their own turf, offering and supplying support such as meals and Children’s Aid. There is also a drop in centre, a health clinic and rehab on offer, the charity believes in helping the complete person, a holistic approach. Meaningful employment is another concern, with teams helping individuals into work through employment training.
To rejoice in Xmas, the Sanctuary gives a massive Christmas feast which takes place each year. This celebration is made more special with a play, a talent show and from the church funds, a gift bag is given out. Members and staff do a long walk in the warmer months. Although donations are important, the charity hopes that those that donate will also become involved in other ways. One of the primary aims is to break down the barriers between those people who are rich and those that are poor. Nobody should be without their dignity and the mission tries to provide all those that need it with the help and means to get it back. Making a difference is more than just donating money but also about making new friends.
Thomson does not believe that the charity is set up to replace the work of social services, but help and work with them. Nada also goes on to say that those individuals who had lived on the streets now have a roof over their heads. These people could not do it by themselves, so the charity has helped them find a house and furnish it.
The life of a young female, born and growing up in Toronto is one of the Sanctuary’s success stories and gives you an idea of the help we give. After she was born this child was placed in the foster care system; the following facts will show you why. This poor baby never stood a chance of a nice life when it began with a family member setting fire to her cot. Bad hygiene led to her grandmother seeing her crawling with cockroaches. This abuse did not stop there, this little child was also sexually abused. She bounced from foster home to foster home and relationship to relationship, and she was addicted to a multitude of things she shouldn’t. For four years this woman has been attending the Sanctuary, a testimonial to the assistance and help she has been getting.
